Tanzania People & Wildlife (TPW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting wildlife, investing in people, and restoring balance to Tanzania’s vital ecosystems through effective conservation action, applied science, and collective impact. Together with communities and additional conservation actors, we focus on delivering win-win, sustainable solutions for people and nature. TPW helps rural communities develop their skills and abilities to protect natural resources in a manner that maximizes their benefits from these landscapes while also preserving ecological integrity. Emphasizing the critical importance of community-led initiatives, the organization provides information, training, and service level support to its rural constituencies to strengthen local institutions and community-driven actions for natural resource management and wildlife conservation.


TPW operates from the Noloholo Environmental Center on the Maasai Steppe in northern Tanzania.

Sharing a boundary with Tarangire National Park, this center acts as TPW’s regional headquarters as well as an educational center where rural community members improve their understanding of the environment and develop hands-on skills in natural resource management. From this center, TPW operates programs in four major programmatic areas: 1) wildlife conservation and human-wildlife conflict prevention, (2) youth environmental education and adult capacity building & training, (3) natural resource conservation and rangeland management, and (4) environmentally-sustainable conservation enterprise and development.


Position Description:

The Gender Specialist will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Laly Lichtenfeld, and the Chief Program Officer, Charles Trout, to ensure the organization is incorporating gender mainstreaming into all program activities and organizational operations in Tanzania. The Gender Specialist will develop, support, and/or lead several programs including the Women in Conservation Internship program, Girl’s Clubs, and other nature-based programming for women and girls. The individual will also provide advice and support to a project the team is advising in Angola. The Gender Specialist will ensure that all team members are contributing to the gender equity goals of the organization and completing assignments as directed.

The Gender Specialist will be responsible for ensuring gender mainstreaming action plans are developed and implemented for all activities and programs and the appropriate sections are included in all internal and external reports. S/he will also support gender inclusion initiatives across all programs to increase women’s participation in natural resource management, conservation enterprise, youth education, and community leadership. S/he will be responsible for representing TPW’s efforts to increase the percentage of women in positions of authority in Tanzania’s conservation sector and working with Tanzanian government representatives to organize a Women in Conservation summit (currently planned for 2022). The Gender Specialist will also liaise with staff from donors and partners to ensure gender inclusion and mainstreaming are appropriately referenced in all contracts, reports, and policy and technical briefs.

The Gender Specialist will be responsible for seeking opportunities for the Women in Conservation interns’ professional development and advocating for increased women and girls inclusion in youth and enterprise programming to donors and partners. 

This position is based at the Noloholo Environmental Center in Loibor Siret, Tanzania. The location is remote and the successful candidate must be comfortable living in a rural environment for extended periods. Travel to other rural areas is expected as well as occasional travel to cities to meet with donors and partners.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement gender mainstreaming action plans for all TPW programs and
  • organizational operations;
  • Coordinate all activities related to the Women in Conservation Internship program;
  • Support the Youth Environmental Education team in implementing Girl’s Clubs at all
  • participating primary and secondary schools;
  • Support the Natural Resource Management and Conservation Enterprise teams in developing
  • and implementing additional nature-based programming for women and girls;
  • Support the Tanzanian Conservation sector in increasing the percentage of women in positions
  • of authority and leadership;
  • Organize a Women in Conservation summit in collaboration with Tanzanian government
  • representatives;
  • Support an emerging conservation project in Angola with advice and direction as needed;
  • Write periodic internal and external reports detailing gender mainstreaming and inclusion
  • topics;
  • Manage activity-level budgets as needed;
  • Represent TPW at funder and partner meetings as needed;
  • Liaise, coordinate and/or oversee student groups, interns, and other visitors on special projects
  • as needed; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

The Gender Specialist will have a Master’s degree in community development, gender studies,

sociology, or a closely related field plus three years of experience in gender equity work. Candidates

with a Bachelor’s degree in the above-mentioned fields and at least five years of experience in gender

equity work may be considered. Experience with managing teams, event planning, and report writing

are required. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in community-based

conservation initiatives and related ventures in the social sciences or natural resource fields.


Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in community development, gender studies, sociology, or a closely related field plus three years of experience in gender equity work (candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in the above mentioned fields and at least five years’ experience in gender equity work may be considered);
  • Experience developing and implementing gender mainstreaming action plans;
  • Demonstrated experience managing a small team of interns, volunteers, or other entry-level staff;
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring women and girls in leadership and career development;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel;
  • Proficiency with use of technology in the workplace;
  • Experience with event planning and coordination;
  • Experience writing reports for internal and external audiences;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • High level of attention to detail;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including respect for other cultures;
  • Willingness and ability to live in a remote setting and travel to remote areas (including possibly Angola);
  • Excellent spoken and written English skills; and
  • Passionate concern for big cats, local communities, and TPW’s mission.


Desired qualifications:

  • Professional fluency in both Swahili and English; and
  • Familiarity with the Maasai language.


Reports to: Chief Program Officer

Salary & Benefits: Full-time position based on experience and qualifications; salary commensurate with experience. Contract is grant dependent, currently expiring in June 2024.
